Local Riders Get Series Win
Juniors Win Single Track Mind Series.
What started out to be a simple task of getting Jayden ward , Rhys Flahive and Callum
Carson to Awarba for the final deciding race turned out to be a classic comedy of errors.
A phone call on Friday night from Scott Carson told me that Jayden had had an accident
at the veladrome and would not be racing and was Connor O’Dwyer able to race. All
good, leave Saturday 3 pm for Newcastle to race Sunday. Saturday 1.30 phone call,
Rhys has had an accident using a compressor to bead a tyre, blew it off the rim, sealant
everywhere, no hearing in one ear and a very sore hand, he’s out of action.
Whether to go or not or try find another rider on short notice and what rules apply to team changes.
It so happened that Callum this time was filling in to Rhys and Jaydens team, you need
at least 2 original members to stay as a team. Now with Rhys and Jayden out , Callum
and Connor had to go back to their original team which was sitting in 3rd position in the
pointscore, but this depended on getting a 3rd rider to join.
Finally after a zillion phone calls Scott tracked down Aiden Kampers, new to the club but with some experience.
They finally got on the road at 7pm.
Following the race through online results was a nerve racking Sunday as Scott was also
competing, so the boys had to manage themselves. Aiden led out and took a wrong turn
which put them back to 6th place on the first lap. Connor attacked and crashed breaking
his seat off which put them further behind. Callum then put in the fastest lap of the day
to get them in the mood. They all worked together to chip away the 15minute deficit over
next few hours to finally take the lead.
Then they kept on going harder to win the race by over 40minutes which is quite unbelievable. The win gave them the series title. A race they will never forget.
